Piano quintet
Suite for string quintet
Dylan Hall began his musical studies with Michael James Smith in 2020 and attended Crowden during the 2021–2022 season. He is currently a student at Albany High School and, for the past three years, and has also been enrolled in the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College Division, where he studies composition with Arkadi Serper.
Dylan has performed for three seasons as keyboardist with the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, taking lessons with Marc Shapiro. His interest in the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra is motivated by his desire to learn how to both be a part of an orchestra while composing for one.
CompositionS
Influenced by 20th-century composers like Messiaen, Ives, Bartok, and Shostakovich, Dylan Hall's compositions are deeply informed by his love for classical music, improvisation, and a sense of nostalgia. Though his work explores diverse emotions, including sarcasm and humor, its fundamental inspiration lies in reflecting on significant relationships formed through his musical experiences. These connections with friends, teachers, and family have profoundly shaped his understanding of people and substantially impact his compositional approach.
He won the 2023-24 National Young Composers Challenge in Florida where Scherzo for Orchestra was premiered by the Orlando Philharmonic. He received the Kris Getz Award for his composition, Scherzo for Quartet, at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. The piece was performed by SFCM students during the pre-college graduation ceremony. The SFCM faculty has also performed three of his pieces, Elegy for String trio, Rondo for Quartet and Intermezzo for Quartet.
Performances
He enjoys composing music as much as he enjoys playing it. He’s performed a number of pieces including Bach’s Concerto No.1 in D Minor with the Crowden orchestra for the 69th Junior Bach Festival in 2022. He was a participant in the Music Teachers Association of California (MTAC) Piano Solo competition and received an award for his first piano sonata for the Composers Today Evaluation. He also won third place at the Henry and Carol Zeiter Piano Competition in 2024.
Over the past three years he has attended summer programs such as Idyllwild Arts Chamber intensive, Colburn Piano Seminar, Pacific Crest Music Festival, Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and wrote two original compositions commissioned for the Yellowbarn Young Artists Program.
Commissions
In his commissioned work he balances tradition with innovation, creating music that reflects both a love for classical tradition and a contemporary voice.
